Best Time To Go

You can always go diving in Sri Lanka in any time of the year but the best time to dive depends on the two monsoon seasons. If you want to dive in the west - south and west coast ( Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, Colombo, Negombo, Kalpitiya…etc), the season is from October to May. May to October is the perfect time if you decide to dive in the northeast coast ( Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Passikudah.. etc.)>. So it is always the best time for diving in Sri Lanka.

What To See When Diving

Among the many things that you get to see when diving, marine life creatures, corals, wrecks and caves take prominence. When talking about marine life creatures, you have the chance of seeing reef fish like sweet lips, clown and titan tigerfish, batfish and other creatures like sea turtles, eels, large eagle barracuda, goliath grouper, trevally, napoleon wrasse, humphead parrotfish and honeycomb moray. And also if you are lucky, you might get the chance of encountering blue whales, shark whales, sperm whales, reef sharks, spotted dolphins, and bottlenose dolphins. Batticaloa Diving Site

Batticaloa is in the most east coast of the island. This area is well known for wreck diving. The best time to go diving in Batticaloa is from May to October. The specialty of the waters here is its high visibility. The average water temperature ranges between 25°C-30°C (77-86°F).

Batticaloa provides great diving sites for both new and experienced divers. It consists of a vast range of dive sites with various levels of difficulty and depth. You can also get to see the fauna in these dive sites. Giant morays, Trevally, Tuna and smaller creatures such as Sweetlips, Emperor and Bannerfish. Lobsters, Crabs, and Shrimp too can be found in large numbers around nearby rocks.

The WWII wreck of the HMS Hermes, the most prominent wreck diving site in Sri Lanka is in Batticaloa. This ship is 167 meters long and weighs 12, 900 tons. It's an aircraft carrier which was sunk along with a crew of 307 men during the time of the Second World War. The wreck is a designated “military maritime grave.” Entering the inside of the wreck, taking photographs of the human remains and removing artifacts are prohibited since it is considered as a Commonwealth war grave. The British Sergeant is another main shipwreck in Batticaloa. It is a vessel which is split in half and parted with a distance of about 10 meters. Other most visited shipwrecks in Batticaloa are McLellan and Allison. Though these are much smaller than British Sergeant and HMS Hermes. Some other diving sites in Batticaloa are Boiler wrecks, Muslim Rock, White Rock, Proppa Gala, Koppara Gala, Nawalady, Wreck MFA Athelstane, Hollyhock, Mushroom Rock and Elephant rock East. There are also a few small but deep caves.

Kalpitiya Diving Experience

Kalpitiya is located in the Puttalam district in the northwestern province of Sri Lanka, 165 kilometers north of Colombo. It is one of the best diving sites in Sri Lanka. The visiting season of Kalpitiya is from April to November. The water temperature is around 25-30°C (77-86°F).

Kalpitiya is most famous for the availability of whales and dolphins. Most importantly the Spinner dolphins can be found only in the Kalpitiya sea. They congregate as superpods nearby to the shore. Many whale varieties like Blue whales, Humpback whales, Sperm whales, Minke whales, Sei whales, Pilot whales, and Fin whales can be seen in this area.

Not only that, the Bar reef sanctuary at Kalpitiya is the largest coral reef in the Indian Ocean, which is about a 1-hour boat ride away from the Kalpitiya shore. This bar reef is spread in an area of 307 Square kilometers approximately and is home to the richest biodiversity in the Indian Ocean. Over 156 coral and 283 species of fish. It's also a Hotspot for manta rays, reef sharks and sea turtles sometimes. This is one of the best diving sites for scuba divers and snorkelers.

Colombo Diving Experience

The main attraction of Colombo are the wrecks. The coastline is littered with a dozen of shipwrecks. Other than that there are also some average reefs, soft and hard corals and of course Marine life creatures. The season of diving in Colombo sites is from November to April. That is after the monsoon is over. There can be slight rains November and December. The best time would be from February to March because the weather is perfectly hot and dry. The water temperature usually is around 28-30°C.

There are recent shipwrecks as well as older ones in this area. The most recent is cargo and bulk carriers sunk in 2012. You can explore much older ones which are covered in hard and soft corals like The Pecheur Breton (Cargo Wreck) and The Chief Dragon (Car Wreck). Other most popular diving sites are Medhufaru, Nilgiri (Tug Wreck), Thermopylae, Taprobane East Wreck, Coal Ship, Toilet Barge, Clarke's Wreck, S S Perseus, Wallet wreck, S S Worcestershire, Battery Barge, Taprobane East Reef, Serendib Reef, Gorgonian Garden, Snapper Alley, Galle Face Point, Barracuda Reef, Anchor Point, Mid Point, Panadura Wreck, Ten Fathoms, Palagala and Pandora’s Box.

Most of these wrecks are covered with vibrant, soft and hard corals as well as black coral trees. These attract many fish species including Blueline Snappers, Bigmouth Mackerel, Fusiliers, Glassfish, and Barracuda. Also bigger fish like Parrotfish, Surgeonfish, Angelfish and large Octopus. Moray Species like Honeycomb, Shrimp, Cleaning Wrasses, Lionfish and Nudibranch like Risbecia, Pulichella, and Chromodoris geminus can be seen near almost all the wrecks.

Trincomalee Diving Site

Trincomalee is in the Eastern province of Sri Lanka. It is the place where the largest natural Harbour in Asia exists. Trincomalee is on the east coast. It is well known for the clear Turkish blue waters, long sandy beaches with the perfect warm and tropical weather. This is also the ideal place for divers and snorkelers. There are many diving sites which attract so many divers around the world to Trincomalee. This place is the home to many marine life creatures like fish, turtles, Nudibranch and famous coral reefs too. The diving season in this area is from March to September.

Diving In Negombo

Negombo is in the West coastline of Sri Lanka. It is one of the most attractive beaches in the Island. Negombo is located around 35 kilometers far from Colombo. Negombo provides diving sites for rock lovers, Wreck lovers, colorful sea creature lovers and coral reef lovers as well. The best season to go diving in the Negombo seas is from October to March.

Among the many diving sites available in Negombo, there are a few wrecks. Wreck We Ling, Wreck Chief Dragon, Taprobane Wreck and Challinor, Aircraft Wreck are some of them. Diving In The South Coast ( Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna and Mirissa)

Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna both are located to the south coast of Sri Lanka. That is in the Galle district of the Southern Province. Hikkaduwa is about 98 kilometers south of Colombo and Unawatuna is about 108 kilometers far. Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna are the areas where scuba diving is mostly done. They are most famous for the breathtaking coral reefs. Not only that there are also a number of well-known wrecks too. So this place is suitable for both well-experienced snorkelers as well as practicing scuba divers. The best time for diving in the south coast is from October to April.

Some of the highlighting dive sites in Unawatuna are Rangoon Wreck, the 100-year-old British Steamer, Tango Wreck, the shallow waters of Jungle Bay, the Napoleon Reef and the Galapiteala Reef.

Hikkaduwa is most known for the fascinating coral gardens. It is the home to a large number of marine life species. You can not only find coral reefs but also some of the best shipwrecks too.
